On the 13th local time, Kyrgyz President Zaparov held talks with visiting Tajikistan President Rahmon in the capital city of Bishkek. Both sides stated that they will take various measures to promote cooperation between the two countries in politics, economy, trade, investment, and other fields.
After the talks, Zaparov and Rahmon signed a bilateral agreement on the border between the two countries. Zaparov stated that developing friendly relations with Tajikistan is one of the key priority directions of Kyrgyzstan's foreign policy. The signing of this document by both parties has historical significance. Rahmon said that bilateral cooperation conforms to the fundamental interests of the two peoples. The signing of the agreement will open a new page in bilateral relations.
After the agreement was signed, the two border ports connecting Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan were officially reopened.
The two countries of Gita have been negotiating on the border issue since 2002. Before 2022, only 504 kilometers of the approximately 970 kilometer border between the two countries will be delineated, and friction will occasionally occur in the undefined border areas. In May 2021, there was another armed conflict in the border area between the two countries, and since then, the border ports have been closed. Starting from the autumn of 2022, intensive talks will be held between the two sides on the issue of border demarcation, and the delineation of all boundary lines between the two countries will be completed on December 4, 2024.
